Fall 2011 Art Classes for adults! in the Mary Anderson Arts Center of the McPherson Opera House, Sponsored by the McPherson Arts Council & the Visual Arts Alliance of McPherson (VAAM)

Evening classes are $55 for the class series. Saturday workshops are $55 for each workshop. Participants will pay the supply fees for materials used in the classes directly to the instructor.

Saturday workshops:

Bleach Discharge on Cellulose Fabrics. Saturday, October 1, 10 am–2 pm. Create design on cotton or linen fabrics or 100% cotton t-shirt with various methods of applying and resisting bleach by painting, stamping, stenciling, spraying, dipping, and some Shibori techniques. $55. Jewelry-Making with Precious Metal Clay (PMC). Saturday, November 12, 9 am–4 pm. Learn to form PMC into pendants, rings, charms, etc., fire and finish with a patina if desired. $55. Students will purchase 16gms PMC silver (about $41.88) directly from the instructor. Tools and access to firing provided. Instructor: Susan Shepard, McPherson

Intro to your Digital Camera. Mondays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 6:30-8:30 pm. Learn how to “set” your camera to obtain the best images while learning the basics of camera operation, image capture, image adjustments, and storage of images. $55. Instructor: Jim Turner, Lindsborg

Drawing (for the Artistically Undiscovered). Tuesdays, October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 6:00-8:00 pm. Learn basic expressive drawing skills and lose your fear of drawing! $55, plus materials fee. Instructor: Michaela Groeblacher, McPherson

Basic Hand-Building with Clay. Thursdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 6:00-8:00 pm. Learn about basic hand-building and sculpting techniques in clay and several finishing methods for ceramic surfaces. $55, plus materials fee. Instructor: Michaela Groeblacher, McPherson

Assemblage! by Nancy Masterson & Kurt Wolf

The new “Assemblages” exhibit by Nancy Masterson, Hutchinson, and Kurt Wolf, Salina, is up and it’s great! You’ve got to see it! The exhibit runs September 1 to October 31. Be sure to come back for the reception on Saturday, September 17, 5-7 pm and meet Nancy and Kurt!

Champagne Art Tour! presented by VAAM

Join us for a Champagne Art Tour, September 24, to the 79th Kansas City Plaza Art Show! Enjoy 240 artists, 3 music stages, kids art workshops, and the Kemper Street Museum.

$75 per person includes Coffee & Muffins, Mimosas & Chocolate Strawberries, and Box Supper on the way home. Lunch is on your own--you can choose from 30 different Plaza Restaurants! Bus departs at 7am from McPherson, returns later that evening.

Tonight! The Raymer Society for the Arts is hosting a reception in honor of the 10th anniversary of the VAAM artist-members' working art residency at the Red Barn Studio, 212 S. Main St, Lindsborg. Stop by 5-7 pm tonight to meet the VAAM artists, who have been working on their art this week.

This is the 10th year they have been Artists-in-Residence, Sunday, July 17-Saturday, July 23, at the Red Barn Studio.

The new exhbit including the work of guest artists Jeannette Seger and Patricia Neufeld, of Newton, Kansas, is July 1–August 30. The reception to meet Jeannette and Patricia will be Friday, August 26, 5–7 pm.

Who Does She Think She Is?

In a half-changed world, women often feel the need to choose: mothering or working? My children’s well-being or my own? Responsibility or self-expression? You are invited to a girls’ night out, June 16, 7 pm, in the Ballroom of the McPherson Opera House. We will show the documentary “Who Does She Think She Is” by Academy Award winning film maker Pamela Tanner Boll, who features five fierce women who refuse to choose. Following the film, McPherson College English professor, Dr. Kim Stanley, will lead an engaging and fun discussion, while VAAM artists serve refreshments. Attendance is free.
